I am a recipe person. Even when I have made something a million times, I still consult with the recipe to avoid disaster. So where do all the recipes come from?
Recipe Box
This is more than just a recipe box, it's a treasure chest. It was given as a bridal shower gift and includes all the best recipes from the women in The Husband's family. I see it as a collection of the experiences, efforts, and culinary triumphs of the women who have fed their families before me. Over the years, I've added favorites from my family of origin and the gems I've stumbled onto along the way.Only the most worthy recipes are given a place in the esteemed Recipe Box.
Many of our favorite recipes trickled down to us by way of these two inspiring cooks:
75th Anniversary Edition
I've been cooking from this book since I was a teenager. We're talking real food that real people eat, made with regular ingredients found in my own cupboard or a real grocery store.
Buns in the Oven: A Cookbook of Family Favorites
This cookbook was put together by an online discussion board I am a part of. I refer to it so often that many of the pages are stained with grease and the cover is about to fall off. I'll let you know when it does.
The Joy of Cooking
I don't use many of the actual recipes, but consult it often when I want to learn more about an ingredient, cooking technique, or procedure. It's like the textbook of cooking. From this I learned those basic things I should know, but don't. Like how to make pan gravy. Or what white sauce is (and how to make it.) And how to transform white sauce into cheese sauce, because everything is better with cheese.
The Original Slow Cooker Recipe Collection
This is by far the best collection of slow cooker recipes I've ever seen. Complete with pictures so you know what the final result should look like, even a dummy like me can churn out something that tastes wonderful!
